Lares Steering Gear Box Reviews for a Gmc

  • #1

I've read a fleck around here nearly the pain with reman steering boxes on pre-95s. I need to supervene upon mine pretty before long. Rock Auto carries a newly manufactured one from Lares; part number 11416? Anyone tried this box?

I personally would be very leary of somebody selling a "new" unit. Saginaw hasn't made parts for these boxes for almost 20 years now, so if information technology'due south new, who made the parts, and what quality(or lack in that location of) are the parts of. From personal experience I can say avoid AGR at all cost's. I would also steer clear of redhead. Mine leaked from the pitman shaft, pulled it apart, and found that they had honed where the seal goes and then the seal doesn't fit tightly enough to the housing now. I ended upwards going to an old style broad seal and shimming it in as deep every bit possible to get information technology to seal up, but who knows for how long it will hold.

So far I take heard goose egg only skilful nigh blue top steering boxes.

Thanks for that info. I've seen the references to blue peak vs scarlet top only don't understand the difference. How does that translate to manufacturers or function numbers?

Cheers for that info. I've seen the references to blue top vs red acme but don't sympathise the difference. How does that interpret to manufacturers or role numbers?

Disregard the to a higher place. I come across now that they refer to two dissimilar brands.

Ferm, near that nothing but good nearly Blue Top, here is your first negative...

I put a Blue Acme in my SOB 1 ton final Autumn. Just pulled it (~750 miles (or maybe 500?) later) for a warranty replacement as it developed a lot of slop that was non present when we installed it. Apologies for the vague description every bit the store did give me better details and I only forgot the effected role names. In any upshot will see if this was a one-off, or a trend.

Warranty procedure with Blue Acme was fairly good. Had to pay a core charge of $100 which I got back when the bad unit was returned. Blue Peak picked-up the shipping costs, so that was definitely good. While the steering box was covered under warranty, I still had to pay labor to swap out parts.

Naturally, the shop is now very leery when I mention the idea of using Blue Top in my 3/4 ton that they are restoring...

@JayTheCPA , on the box that failed, did they rebuild your original or did y'all purchase one off the shelf from them?

Got a unit of measurement from Blue Top and then sent mine back as core.

Not certain if I'thou missing something, merely on blue top'south website I don't run into anything for 88-98 c/k2500, only k1500 truck and suburban.

Given how both redhead and blue height are reman units, I decided to take the slop out of my box thanks to Ferm'southward splendid write up

For only $30 I got a consummate seal & bearing rebuild kit. And one time I'g rich and famous I'll upgrade to an all new unit that @FellowTraveler highly recommends

No, you're correct. They don't keep stock for the 2500 or 3500 in that year range. Only, they told me that they tin can rebuild mine.
